Challenge: #122 Steve is hurt on Fathers Day and Mark
wonders if Steve will be ok.
The Long Night
Thursday night 6:30 PM. Father's Day- Steve Sloan was busy
finishing some paperwork on a case. He called his father who had
a busy day and was taking a nap after working for 3 shifts.
Amanda Bentley who was the Medical Examiner for the hospital
answered the phone." Amanda tell dad I will be late."
Steve said. "I will see you later." She hung up
the phone.
Amanda went to check on Mark and leave the note about Steve's
call under the door of his room. She tried reading her book and
tried not to worry about Steve after all what was there to worry
about? Mark still looked tired as he walked to the kitchen.
He read the note under the door.
Mark sat down to talk with Amanda to talk more about what Steve
said on the phone. "He didn't say what time he would be
back." She told the good doctor. Mark needed to check on his
patients. Amanda drove him to the
hospital.
Meanwhile Steve was getting ready to leave and go talk to the
suspect in the latest murder. The murder involved
the kidnapping of little girl that was missing for a while. First
Steve faxed some information Amanda needed
on an autopsy report.
When that was done he left the station. Mark was making notes on
Mrs. Smith who needed a change in her
medication. He wrote out a prescription for Mrs. Smith to have
filled. Mark felt his eyes get heavy and decided
to rest.
Amanda went to see if Mark was ready to go home. She found
him trying to read something but couldn't stay
awake. Amanda drove Mark home to rest. As they went in the door
an odd feeling came over Mark Sloan. There was going to be a
dinner for just the four of them that day but it would have to
wait.
"Mark what is the matter?" Amanda wondered as she sat
by Mark. He began to feel pale. Amanda got a glass of water for
Mark. "I have a feeling something will happen."
Mark put the thought aside. Jesse was still busy at the hospital
looking at charts and making notes to talk about with Mark.
Steve had been taking notes about the case and took a drink of
something and started to leave. He tried to
focus on his cell phone to call 911. Minutes later he fell to the
ground hard. At the beach house Amanda
continued to get dinner ready for the party.
The ambulance took Steve to Community General. Jesse ran to
see who was on his way in. "BP dropping fast
blurred vision and a nasty bump on the head". The EMT
shouted as he handed Jesse the chart. Jesse quickly had to get
Steve to the O. R. fast.
"Get Mark paged now!" he yelled. Jesse ran to Save
Steve as fast as he could.A nurse ran to call Mark. Amanda went
to check on Mark who was still asleep.
Amanda heard her pager go off she called the hospital and was
trying to understand what the nurse said. "Steve
was in an accident and he is not doing good. The nurse hung up
the phone. Amanda still held the phone and had
to tell Mark.
Mark came in and saw her face. She told him what she learned on
the way to the hospital. Jesse continued to
see what else could be wrong with him as time went away. The CAT
SCAN showed some swelling on the brain which had to be drained
away.
Jesse came to tell Mark and Amanda what happened to Steve. He sat
in a chair and began the story. "Steve is
still in the O.R. The CAT SCAN showed some swelling on his
brain". Jesse said nothing and let Mark and Amanda go over
what Jesse had told them. Mark asked when the operation would
start. "In a few minutes." Jesse led them to
Steve.
Mark walked to Steve's bed and stroked his hair. Amanda got a
chair for Mark who looked as though he would fall. Jesse fixed
the machines as they continued to hum as medication traveled
through his body. Jesse took Amanda aside to ask if she would
help in the operation. Amanda told Jesse that she would help him.
Amanda told Mark she would help Jesse. "Please take care of
him and keep me posted." Mark said as a dad not as a doctor.
Amanda held him tight in a hug before she left. "You rest I
will see you later."
Mark walked to his office and saw a picture of Steve on his desk.
He lay down and went to sleep though not a
restful one. Jesse began draining the fluid from his brain. Which
took 3 hours. The wait seemed to long. Mark
was trying to rest but was worried. Amanda came in and saw Mark
falling asleep and waking with a start.
"Mark Steve is in recovery now." She carefully helped
Mark up together they walked to Room 122. Amanda said Steve might
look different. Mark walked in not prepared for what he saw in
bed. Amanda studied Mark to keep him from falling.
Mark had seen many patients like this but it was always different
when it was someone you knew. He sat down in a chair with Amanda
close by.
