Title: The Giver
email: dldcallie_voyager_83@yahoo.com

Steve pulled himself up onto the last level and took a deep breath.
Finally, he reached the destination he’d set out for. Breathing in deeply,
Steve closed his eyes as he listened to sound of birds over head and water
waves in the distance. He smiled as the sun hit him in the face and the
breeze cooled him down. Another familiar sound was made. He heard his name.
It was right below him. Steve slowly opened his eyes and dropped his gear
beside him. He looked down. It was Jesse.

“Stop daydreaming and take my bags.” Jesse threw the two black gears at
Steve then grabbed onto the roots of the tree. Steve grinned as Jesse
stumbled back down.

“Give me your hand.” Steve said. Jesse reached up, clinging onto Steve.
With one pull, Jesse flew onto the soft grass.

“Thanks.” Jesse didn’t like thanking Steve, but knew he needed the help.
“Let’s stop and rest here for the night.” Jesse started complaining. Steve
glanced at his wrist watch.

“Well, we made it faster then I thought we would. Okay.” Jesse slumped
beside a tree and gulped down the water he had been saving. Meanwhile,
Steve put up the tents and gathered woods and rocks for a campfire. Soon
the darkness came and fire was ready. Steve finally sat down after the hard
work. Jesse sat closer to the fire, unpacking some food. He pulled out the
skillets, some pots and cups. Steve watched Jesse pull out hot dogs,
marshmellows, water bottles, hot chocolate mixes, chips, and etc.

“No wonder you brought two bags.” Steve said, sarcasticly.

“Didn’t want us to hungry, you know.” That night a feast was served. Steve
and Jesse finally cuddled in the sleeping bags and went to sleep.

The next morning, Jesse stepped out of his tent, yawning. His hair was
brushed and he was dressed for the adventure of going home. Steve hadn’t
waken up yet. Jesse prepared breakfast. The smell of eggs and bacon woke
Steve up. He peeked out of his tent, yawning.

“You’re up already?” He yawned somemore. Before Jesse could answer, Steve
disappeared inside. A few minutes later, he came back out, combing his
hair. He sat down next to Jesse and started eating his breakfast. “This is
good.”

Later in the afternoon, Jesse realized that they weren’t going home that
day. Steve spent most of his time at the stream near by while Jesse swatted
off the misquitoes. Steve sat on the hill and stared into the far distance.
He squinted, as his eyes followed a soaring hawk searching for it’s snack.
Then something grabbed Steve’s attention. Something in the far distance. He
stood up and walked closer, jumping on the dry land between the stream.
Jesse saw it too. He followed Steve.

“What is that?” Jesse asked. They both stared at a shadowy object in the
distance. It seemed to be moving. Jesse stepped forward. Steve grabbed him
and told him to get the supplies together. “Why?”

“Just do it Jesse. I don’t like the looks of this.” Steve said swallowing
hard. Jesse grumbled and stuffed the supplied in the bags, folded up the
tents, and packed the sleeping bags. He watched Steve as Steve still stared
at the moving object. The object was moving closer and much faster to them.
Steve backed up to the location and told Jesse to head down the slope.
Jesse did. Steve started to but the saw the object a few feet from him. It
was a black bear. The bear haunched on its back legs and started growling.
Steve drew his pistol and started shooting. It didn’t effect the bear. He
ducked when the bear’s claw came driving at him. Again, she shot the bear
in the chest and on the legs, but no effect was done. Steve dodged the
bears swing again the second time. With one final swing, the bear threw
it’s clawed fist, hitting Steve head on. Jesse jumped on, and was chin
hight to see Steve flying out of the bears way and hitting a tree. Steve
was out cold. Jesse dropped and started panicing. The gun landed in front
of Jesse. He knew he couldn’t fight the bear and he knew if he didn’t do
something quickly, Steve could die. Jesse leaned back and wanted to cry,
hoping the bear wouldn’t see him or Steve as supper. Jesse jumped up again
and saw the bear leaving. He dropped the luggage and made a leap. Slowly,
he slid down the slope. Again, he tried but only made it chin high. Now he
saw something. A girl. She had long brown hair. She looked at the injured
body next to the tree and walked over to it. Steve was in bad condition.
Though, no signs of blood, he was bruised pretty severely. She started to
lift him when Jesse called out.

“Hey! Hey you!” She jerked around and slowly walked to the ledge just in
time to see Jesse jumped waist high and start to fall. The girl quickly
grabbed him under the arms and pulled up. “Thanks. What’s your name?” He
said walking to Steve.

“I'm.." She paused. "Call me The Giver. Is your friend okay?”

“The Giver?"

"You can say, I give life back to those who lose it." Her voice faded.
"And you friend?"

"Not good. He’s unconscious.. um probably have a bad concussion and maybe
a few bruised ribs,” Jesse continued to feel Steve’s side and moved to his
legs. “And a bad break in the right tibula bone. In other words not good.”
The girl kneeled beside Jesse and placed her hand on Steve’s side.

“What are you doing?” Jesse said, pulling her away.

“Are you a doctor?” The girl asked.

“Yes.”

“Then act like one and get some branches for splints.” Jesse looked at
her. “Now!” With that command, Jesse quickly started looking for wood. She
placed her hand on Steve’s chest and closed her hands. Jesse saw in the
distance a glow come from her and dropped the wood he collected. Steve
moaned then opened his eyes. He saw her looking down at him.

“You will not remember me at all.” With that she lightly kissed him on the
forehead making Steve’s eyes close. Jesse watched as her glow faded and she
with it. He picked up the wood and ran over to him.

“Steve! Steve! Steve, are you okay? What happen!?” Jesse was panting when
he reached Steve. Steve’s eyes opened closely.

“Jesse? What happened? My head is killing me as well as my leg.” Jesse
wrapped a piece of cloth around his leg and tied the splits sturdy.

“Did you see her?” Jesse asked.

“Who?”

“The girl!! She helped me up then she touched your chest and
kissed your forehead and-”

“Jesse you’re crazy. There was no girl.” Steve was back to his normal
self; arguing. On the was back down the mountain, Jesse tried to explain
what happen. Steve leaned on Jesse and suddenly dropped.

“Steve!” Jesse leaned down and examined him. He was sweating
bad and very pale. “Steve, hold on. We’re almost down the hill.” Jesse
grabbed a bottled water and forced Steve to drink it. Steve revived again.
“Don’t you ever do that again!”

“Sorry, just wanted to see if you could carry me.” Steve grinned. They
headed down the slope and finally made it to Jesse’s car. Halfway there,
Steve started to passout.

“Steve Sloan, don’t you die on me!! You hear?” Jesse sped up. Sirens in
the background made Jesse pull over. “I don’t have time for this.” A cop
walked along side of the car and peered in the window.

“What’s the rush?” He looked over at Steve.

“Officer, this man is about to die!! I don’t have time to explain, but I
have to get him to a hospital.” Jesse was panicing. The cop backed up.

“Follow me.” The police man put his sirens on and sped ahead of Jesse.
Jesse followed. Steve was whiter now and began to breath harder.

“Stay with me. If you die, Mark will never forgive me! Steve!” Jesse
tapped on his shoulder. Steve’s eyes fluttered as they finally pulled into
the hospital.

In the Community General Hospital ER, hours passed as Amanda and Mark
worked at Steve, keeping him alive. Jesse leaned back in the waiting chair.
Finally, Mark stepped out and smiled.

“He’ll be okay. What exactly happened?” Jesse tried explaining everything.
Mark smiled and nodded his head. A new nurse wlkled into the hospital and
met up with Mark. Jesse stared at the girl. “Oh, Jesse, this is Jennifer
Cooper. She’ll be with us for a couple days. She nodded.

“It- it’s- it’s you!! Th- th- that girl that-.. help me.. with Steve..
and.. kissed..”

“Who?” She asked.

“Just start on floor six.” Mark said. “Jesse, I think you’re a little
dillusional.” Mark and Jesse wondered into the ER and met Steve.

“Steve! Tell Mark about that girl that kissed you.” Jesse became desperate.
“What girl?” Steve asked. Jesse’s mouth dropped.

“Maybe you need to go fishing or something.” Mark said.

“NO! No! No, no, no.. I think I just need to go home.” Jesse backed out to
the room, tripping over a cart. Mark and Steve looked at eachother and
shrugged.
